Antrad Medical is developing equipment for plasma thawing. The warming/thawing procedure involves that a bag with frozen plasma is put in a disposable container (field equalizer) and then placed in the device where the warming or thawing will be performed. The disposable container will also be developed and marketed by Antrad Medical and its partners.
Presently, frozen plasma is thawed in water baths or other kinds of thermal warming devices, which takes between 20 and 45 minutes depending on the efficiency of the equipment. With Antrad’s plasma thawing device a standard package with frozen plasma can be thawed and warmed up in less than 5 minutes. These improvements offer several significant advantages:
Plasma can be thawed/warmed quickly in emergency situations and thus save lives
Less need for pre-thawed plasma will simplify and facilitate the logistics for blood banks and surgical wards.
Hygienic handling - the water baths currently in use are a clear hygienic risk.
Plasma savings. Presently, valuable blood products that have been thawed but not utilized, are wasted.
Significant cost savings.
